DIY Chipboard Word Sign Using the Cricut Maker

Hello crafters!

Today I am sharing a super fun project that I have been working on recently.  I adore those individual letters that you can mount to make a special word or statement for your home decor.  They are all the rage in the stores so I played around with my Cricut Design Space and came up with my first HOME word sign.

I have a ton of extra patterned paper in my craft studio and it really needs to be used so I felt this is a great way to begin doing so.  Each chipboard letter can be covered with the same paper or a variety….it’s your choice!

In Cricut Design Space I began my design by selecting the Arab Brushstroke standard regular font and resized it to size 360.  I typed out all the letters to spell out my word HOME.  To make the letters thicker I cut out four of each letter using Paper Accents or Cricut heavy chipboard.  I used my Cricut Maker and the knife blade.  It does take some time but the cuts are beautiful!

I also designed the box base by drawing rectangles in Design Space.  My base is longer than a 12″ piece of patterned paper so I needed to make the length in two pieces and join them together during assembly.Word Sign using the Cricut MakerThe font I chose is available for free if you are a Cricut Access member.  You can find out how to subscribe to Access here.  Cricut gives you three options for your subscription.

I used my Art Glitter Glue to individually adhere each chipboard letter to itself, aligning all the edges and then set a weight on it to dry.  My favorite choice to weigh down these letters is a Bacon Press.  Yes I know it sounds kind of crazy but honestly it works so well!  They come in a variety of sizes and they are easy to store on a shelf.   The press that I use is included at the end of this post under Products Used!

Under images, I  typed “wreath” in the search bar.  There are many wonderful wreath options to choose for an accent for the letter O.  I chose  The image titled Achieve Wreath.  This image is available for free if you are subscribed to Cricut Access. Cricut Decorative Wreath

To customize this image for this specific project I deleted the text “achieve” by ungrouping and deleting that word.  I then changed my wreath measurement to  3.857″ w  by  5″ h so that it fits my letter “O”.  I also duplicated the image so that I could cut a few wreaths and layer them for a bit of dimension.  I like the solid Fun Stampers Journey 80lb. cardstock for my wreath cuts.

I also chose four designs of patterned paper for the front of my letters and I backed each letter with one paper design.  All the edges were inked using Fun Stampers Journey True Color Fusion Ink Pads in Cool Pool.  I also added a touch of Sweet Pear ink to parts of the wreath embellishment.

Word Sign Letters HOME The wreath embellishment has two layers of card stock adhered together with liquid glue.  I trimmed some darker green leaves and glued them throughout the Sweat Pear cardstock wreath.  I also added a touch of Sweet Pear ink to parts of the wreath image cutout and some dots of Gold Wink of Stella Glitter Pen.  A few  Fun Stampers Journey Clear Rhinestones added the final touch ❤️

I added each letter into the slot located on the base using Fun Stampers Journey Journey Glaze.  I let it dry completely so the letters stayed level.

On the front and back of the base, I added a few small contrasting strips of cardstock which helped hide the paper seams.  I adhered two of the smallest Fun Stampers Journey Fashion Gold embellishments to each strip to make it look like a secured strap.  I selected a gorgeous paper flower from the Fun Stampers Journey Cottage Flowers collection to glue to the letter E.  It was hard to choose from the pretty colors in this collection but I decided on  Rustic Rose.  It is a beautiful accent color for this project.
